The most important natural resources in the city of Pirot are:
• About 69,730 ha of agricultural land,
• About 42,000 ha of forests, most of which are on Stara Planina, Vlaška Planina and Vidlić,
• Relatively high hydropower potential.
• Exceptional wealth of the highest quality drinking water (from natural liquid and underground sources),
• Richness of plant and animal life
The area of Pirot is relatively poor in economically significant mineral raw materials. Here you meet several types of sandstone, fire clay, quartz sands and a little bit of energy raw materials.
Perm red sandstone is recorded on the stretch from the Dead Bridge to the village of Topli Do, in layers of 0.5 – 1.0 m. It is possible to exploit it in construction for cladding or making carved blocks.
UIn the Valley of the Toplidol River, colorful sandstones from the lower Triassic were recorded, in layers of 0.5 – 2.0 m. Due to the appropriate physical – mechanical characteristics, they can be a good building material.
Fire clays and quartz sandstones are located from the Toplodol River to Temska. There are phenomena of iron ores, coal and elements of phosphate concretions, but their reserves have not been thoroughly explored. In the area of Sirovitišta – Maple Rid, gabro – diabases of Paleozoic age were recorded, and bigar (speleothem) near Temska and Krupac.
There is coal in the lias sediments of Velika Lukanja.
In relatively small quantities, which is why this site has no serious economic importance in the current period, the recorded mineral raw materials have not been significantly exploited. The exception is somewhat only limestone from Nišor and Oreovica (which were used for the construction of the Pirot Dam and the lining of the Nišava Riverbed in Niš, as well as marble from Tepoš, which was used by the paint and varnish industry in Pirot.
