The city of Pirot is the economic, cultural and administrative seat of the Pirot District. Today's Pirot covers an area of a total of 1,232 km² and is ranked third in the Republic of Serbia by area. The territory of Pirot, next to the city center, includes another 71 inhabited places. It is located in the border area of the Republic of Serbia towards Bulgaria, on the important international road Corridor 10 that connects Europe with Asia, historically known as "Via militaris". It is bordered by the Republic of Bulgaria and the municipalities of Babušnica, Bela Palanka, Dimitrovgrad and Knjaževac.
Pirot was granted city status in 2016. According to the level of development of the local self-government unit belongs to the Second Group. The population density is about 44 inhabitants per km².
